Vitamins
As one of the very important nutrients in the infant and follow-up formulas, it is very important to have a regular control that the product meets the nutritional requirements for infants. The fact that some vitamins are toxic in excess amounts states the importance of a regular control. At Eurofins Vitamin Testing we offer state-of-the art equipment with methods especially developed for infant formulas and follow-up formulas.
Amino Acids
For humans there are 9 essential amino acids that cannot be synthetized in the body and thus needs to be supplied in the diet. For infants and children there are 6 amino acids that are considered to be conditionally essential as the self-synthesis is limited and therefore also needs to be supplemented. These amino acids are arginine, cysteine, glycine, glutamine, proline and tyrosine. It is therefore important to have a regular control of the amino acid composition to make sure that the formula meets the nutritional requirements.
Taurine
Taurine consist of the amino acids methionine and cysteine and vitamin E. It is considered to be one of the conditionally essential amino acids in infant nutrition as infants are limited in being able to synthesize sufficient amounts. Studies have found that taurine could improve cognitive learning of the infant and children.
Choline
Choline
Choline is a vitamin-like essential nutrient and is proven to be important for human health. In a still developing brain choline deficiency may have an influence on the memory as an adult. The US Food and Drug Administration require infant formula to be supplemented with choline.
Inositol
Inositol
Inositol is found in high concentrations in human breast milk and emerging evidence has shown that inositol plays an important role in brain development. The US Food and Drug Administration require infant formula to be supplemented with inositol.
Carnitine
Carnitine
Carnitine is supplemented in infant formulas to match the concentrations normally found in human breast milk and is believed to have an influence on growth and development.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are also found in the human breast milk and is believed to have an impact on infants’ eye health. Lutein is more and more used as a supplement in infant formulas worldwide.
